Long contract kept the number in a manageable cap range for the team. Players gets huge security with a top organization in a no-tax state.
In an attempt to maintain a manageable cap number, the Lightning got Paul to agree to the lengthy contract that will have a $3.15M average salary. As noted by TSN's Chris Johnston, in exchange, Paul gets long-term security with a great team, and won't be dinged by state taxes like others.
Paul was acquired at the trade deadline by the Bolts this season, and played a big role in their advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third straight season.
The 26-year-old left winger notched 14 points in 21 games after coming over from the Ottawa Senators.
