NHL Rumors: Top Remaining UFA Defenseman Likely To Take "Prove It" Contract

P.K. Subban is still on the market for teams looking for a decent option on the right side of their defense with experience for cheap. Since he has never won a Stanley Cup and was once yearly in the running for the Norris Trophy, Subban may take a short-term "prove it" deal if it is with a contender, per The Fourth Period.

He may not be the Norris Trophy caliber defenseman he last was in 2017-18 and isn't worth nearly the $9 million he was being paid until last season, but he works hard and is still an effective player that many teams should have an eye on. If this report holds true, there are a number of contenders and the right side is never easy to fill on defense.

If we estimate what a "prove it" deal would look like, Subban would be looking at one year and less than $3 million. He is 33 years old and isn't young and dominant as he used to be, but on a second pairing or even third making that little could change the complexion of a group.

Some teams that come to mind that are in contention that should still be looking to upgrade the right side of their defense are the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Dallas Stars. Sure Subban could take more money and open up his options, but he has accomplished everything in his career but a Cup and has more than enough money. I think whoever signs him will get a steal and Subban will be impactful in a bottom pairing role.
