Florida Panthers & Calgary Flames Complete Blockbuster
The Panthers and Flames have completed the blockbuster of the 2022 offseason. Matthew Tkachuk is heading to Florida, while the Flames have landed Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first-round pick. Tkachuk has also immediately signed an eight-year extension and will carry a $9.5 million cap hit.
Everyone knew a Tkachuk trade was on the way, as the star winger told the Flames that he was not willing to sign a long-term extension with them. Instead of potentially losing him for nothing next summer, the Flames have acted quickly and landed themselves a big return. Yet, the Panthers now have the star locked up for eight years.
Losing Huberdeau stings for the Panthers, though. The 29-year-old just recorded a 115-point campaign but is also in the final year of his deal. Still, the Flames have lost a star in Tkachuk but now have gained one in Huberdeau.
Weegar should be a solid addition to the Flames' top four. Like Huberdeau, he is in the final year of his contract, so they could lose him as soon as next offseason. In 80 games this season, he had eight goals and 44 points.
As for Schwindt, he's a young forward who will push for a spot on Calgary's NHL roster next season. In 72 games this season with the Checkers, he had 19 goals and 40 points.
