Penguins & Canadiens Complete Trade
The Penguins have acquired Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling from the Canadiens in exchange for Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round pick.
This is the second big trade that the Penguins have made today, as they of course sent John Marino to the Devils to land Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick. By adding Petry, they are replacing Marino with a more experienced offensive defenseman. In 68 games this past season, Petry scored six goals and recorded 27 points.
Poehling played in 58 games this season with the Canadiens, where he had nine goals and 17 points. He will be competing for a spot in Pittsburgh's bottom six in 2022-23.
Matheson just put together a 31-point campaign in 74 games with Pittsburgh this year. Overall, it was a good year for the 28-year-old defenseman, but Pittsburgh had no trouble moving him to land Petry.
