Flames Find A Taker For Sean Monahan
The Calgary Flames needed to clear some room under the cap for their splashy, expensive new addition today, which means that Sean Monahan, and his $6.4M cap hit, is headed to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Flames landed the big UFA prize today, signing Nazem Kadri to a massive 7-year contract with a $7M cap hit. But they could only complete that move by freeing up some space under the cap, so Monahan's $6.4M is off to Montreal. The Canadiens also receive a conditional 2025 first-round pick from Calgary in order to take on Monahan's contract. In return, the Flames receive 'future considerations.'
Monahan had hip surgery in April, after a disappointing campaign in which he recorded just 8 goals and 23 points in 65 games. He was also a team-worst minus-15.
The Flames signed him to a massive 7-year, $44.6M contract in 2016, a deal that now has one year left.
Monahan's best year in Calgary came in 2018-19, when he recorded career highs of 34 goals and 82 points. Now, at the still-young age of 27, it appears that numerous injuries and surgeries (wrist, groin, hernias) over the years have taken their toll on his effectiveness.
