Cates was an undrafted forward, signed by the Flyers out of the University of Minnesota-Duluth in April of 2021. He is the older brother of Noah Cates, the Flyers' fifth-round draft pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
The twenty-four year old appeared in 37 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this past season, scoring two goals and eight assists. He's played just 15 games in the NHL, scoring one goal and one assist. He'll look to increase those numbers this season.
