Calgary Flames Sign Defenseman to Big Extension
The Calgary Flames have signed MacKenzie Weegar to an eight-year contract extension. Starting in 2023-24, he will carry a $6.25 million cap hit.
Weegar made it known that he wanted to sign an extension with the Flames before the start of the season to avoid any distractions. Now, they have officially agreed to terms, and he can focus on the year ahead and making an impact with his new club.
Weegar was one of the big names acquired in the Matthew Tkachuk trade with the Florida Panthers this offseason. The 28-year-old is coming off of a strong season that saw him score eight goals and record 44 points in 80 games. With play like this, he should work well in the Flames' top four for several years to come.
