Panik did not make the Islanders' NHL roster this season and was set to play in the AHL yet again this campaign. Yet, this loan overseas will allow the 31-year-old to play closer to home and to have a large role with his new club.
Panik played in four games for the Islanders last year, where he had an assist and a minus-2 rating. He primarily spent time in the AHL, however, where he had nine goals and 10 assists in 39 games split between the Bridgeport Islanders and Chicago Wolves.
Although Panik has been loaned, he will still cost $250,000 on the Islanders' salary cap. $1.125 million of his $2.75 million cap hit is buried, while the Detroit Red Wings are still paying $1.375 million of it.
