NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs Want to Sign Forward
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in signing Zach Aston-Reese to a contract for the season. The 28-year-old is currently on a PTO with the club and has impressed at camp. However, the Leafs also have limited cap and roster space to ink him to a deal, so things aren't a guarantee just yet.
If the Maple Leafs managed to sign Aston-Reese, he will be a good addition to their bottom six. He is noted for being an excellent penalty killer because of his strong defensive play. With that, he has shown in the past that he can produce decent secondary scoring. Although the Maple Leafs are already golden on that front, it wouldn't hurt to add to it.
In 69 games this past season split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks, he had five goals to go along with 15 points.
Alas, it will be intriguing to see what happens with Aston-Reese from here, but if the Leafs have it their way, they will have him signed for opening night.
