NHL Rumors: Hurricanes Could Target Coyotes' Defenceman

The Carolina Hurricanes have struggled a ton in one area of their game, the power play. They have the lowest power-play percentage among playoff teams and can't seem to find a fix. In past seasons they've had Dougie Hamilton and Tony DeAngelo (power-play specialists), but for some reason the power play hasn't been the same this season.

Erik Duhatschek of The Athletic suggested that the "woeful" power play could get a boost if the Hurricanes bring in another puck-moving defenceman. The top name that comes to mind is Shayne Gostisbehere. The Arizona Coyotes are in full rebuild mode and there aren't many defencemen who are better than Gostisbehere on the man advantage.

The Hurricanes have a fair bit of cap space right now, but when Max Pacioretty is healthy, the cap will be tight. Having a successful power play or not may make or break the team's season. They are already a strong defensive team, so maybe they trade someone like Brady Skjei back to the Coyotes in order to fit Gostisbehere under the cap. The power play of the Hurricanes could always come around considering Burns is still an effective player. It is something to watch for as the season progresses.
