NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs Looking to Make Changes
Rumor has the Toronto Maple Leafs are considering making an early season trade. The team is looking to upgrade up front as a number of Maple Leafs forwards are struggling so far this season.
Two names in particular, Alexander Kerfoot and Pierre Engvall have recently joined Wayne Simmonds as prime trade candidates. Both Kerfoot and Engvall have struggled to start the 2022-23 season, both only scoring one goal to this point.
Both forwards are pending free agents and will likely need to have a 'sweetener' included in the trade package for the Maple Leafs. General manager Kyle Dubas has drafted pretty well the past few seasons and there's a number of Toronto prospects that appeal to other teams including Matthew Knies and Topi Niemela.
The Maple Leafs have over $5 million in cap space at the moment with defenseman Jake Muzzin on LTIR, however goaltender Matt Murray is expected to be activated for Saturday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks and will eat up the majority of the cap space. Regardless, expect to see the Maple Leafs pull off something in the coming weeks, they've been talking trade scenarios with other teams since training camp ended.
