3 Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Assets
The Toronto Maple Leafs are working the phones trying to find ways to upgrade their roster. General manager Kyle Dubas hasn't been shy when it comes to making bold moves and this season the franchise is considered all in when it comes to the trade market.
Let's examine a few Maple Leafs' trade assets who could be flipped before the March 3 trade deadline:
Pontus Holmberg
The 23-year-old Swedish center was a sixth-round pick back at the 2018 draft and is now getting some serious run with the Maple Leafs. Holmberg has slotted in nicely for Sheldon Keefe as a shut-down center and has also chipped in with seven points in 17 games so far this season. He's always on the right side of the puck and is defensive responsible. Holmberg's offensive game will come, but he's best suited in a checking role. Considering the potential with his game, he could help the Leafs in a trade package to land someone like Bo Horvat or Ryan O'Reilly.
Topi Niemela
The 20-year-old mobile defenseman is arguably the Maple Leafs best prospect and the only way he's getting moved is if Dubas and company land a star in return. Niemela won't be traded for a rental and is likely only getting shipped out for long-term gain considering how much potential the organization sees in his game. Niemela was a former third-round pick in 2020 and so far this season, has seven points in 29 games for Karpat in the Lilga. Top-pairing minutes and a power-play quarterback is Niemela's ceiling.
Joseph Woll
The Maple Leafs have a great tandem in Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov and considering Murray is signed for another season and Samsonov is a restricted free agent who is likely sticking around for a couple more seasons, the Maple Leafs have Joseph Woll who they can dangle on the trade market. The 24-year-old netminder is signed for two more seasons at $766,667 and has NHL experience with four games under his belt. Woll has the game to be an NHL regular and has shown so with his 2.76 GAA and .911 SV%. So far in four AHL games, Woll has produced a .926 SV%. Certainly someone who could be on the move before the March 3 trade deadline.
