Devils Rumors: New Jersey Out on Center & In on Winger
According to some rumors coming out of New Jersey, the Devils have turned off their attention from Vancouver Canucks center Bo Horvat and are now going all in for San Jose Sharks winger Timo Meier.
This rumor likely stems from the fact Meier admitted over the weekend a trade is likely coming and he's also now able to speak to other teams regarding a contract extension. Sharks general manager Mike Grier has given his agent permission to speak to other teams and the Devils are likely having ongoing conversations this week.
Meier is having a career season, scoring 27 goals and 47 points in his first 48 games. He's a pending restricted free agent who is due a $10 million qualifying offer, which was limiting how many teams were making trade offers to the Sharks. This is why Grier opened up the phone lines and is allowing for Meier's camp to speak to other teams to work out a long-term extension to lower his average annual value. Meier makes $6 million against the cap in 2022-23.
Besides the Devils, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Kraken remain very interested in Meier. Expect any package heading back to San Jose to include a first-round pick and top prospect, along with one roster player who can dress for the Sharks for the remainder of at least this season.
