Florida Panthers Make Roster Move
Yesterday (Jan. 11), the Florida Panthers claimed Casey Fitzgerald off of waivers from the Buffalo Sabres. To free up a roster spot for Fitzgerald, the Panthers have made another roster move, as Matt Kiersted has been sent down to the Charlotte Checkers.
Kiersted has seen the most NHL action of his young career so far this season, as he has played in 20 games, where he has one goal, three assists, and a plus-4 rating. Overall, he has played the best hockey of his young career this season, but it still was not enough for him to maintain his spot on Florida's NHL roster. Now, he will be looking to make a big impact with the Checkers in response to his demotion.
Kiersted has shown this season that he can work as a depth defenseman, so we should not be surprised if he ends up landing another call-up to the Panthers at some point during the season. Until then, his primary goal will be to impress while with the Checkers from here. After all, that would certainly help his chances of rejoining the Panthers in the near future.
