NHL Rumors: Insider Links St. Louis Blues Defenseman to Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are looking to boost up their defensive group before the trade deadline passes. Due to this fact, they have been linked to several defensemen around the league, and this is a trend that will only continue as we get closer to the deadline. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has now brought up the prospect that the Oilers could go out and acquire St. Louis Blues defenseman Niko Mikkola because of this.
Mikkola may not be as big of a trade target as teammates like Ryan O’Reilly, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Ivan Barbashev, but he still has the potential to make an impact for a playoff team. With the Oilers needing help on their left side, he certainly could fill in as a bottom-pairing defenseman for them. This is because he plays a very reliable game defensively and chips in with a bit of physicality along with it.
We will need to wait and see if the Oilers end up making a big push for Mikkola before the deadline passes. On paper, there seems to be a legitimate fit here, but time will tell if it does in fact come to fruition from here.
