NHL Rumors: 6 Teams Linked to Trades for Blackhawks Jonathan Toews

The Chicago Blackhawks are expected to hold conversations with their captain over the course of the next week or so as Jonathan Toews' time with the franchise is likely coming to an end. The veteran forward is a pending free agent and the Blackhawks are trying to expedite a rebuild and will need to move Toews to do so. Recently Shayna Goldman of The Athletic suggested these six teams should be involved in the trade sweepstakes:

Colorado Avalanche

There's no doubt the Avs will add a center before the March 3 trade deadline and Toews could certainly be a fit. The team is looking to slot someone in on their second line and bump everyone else down to create more balance in their lineup. Losing Nazem Kadri has created some serious holes in an unfinished Avalanche roster.

Winnipeg Jets

The one team we've linked since day one, Toews is a big part of the Winnipeg community and a move to his hometown is something that he may approve. They also have a need for some more depth and could use Toews on the third line and bump Adam Lowry down to fourth line duty or a spot on Toews' wing.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are open to just about anything and are looking to add one defenseman and at least one forward to their mix. Toews would give them a veteran presence and shut-down center for the team's third line.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes want to add a significant piece up front now that Max Pacioretty is out for the season. They have the money to do so and would be one of the only teams in the league who wouldn't need a huge salary retention from the Blackhawks on Toews $10.5 million salary this season.

Washington Capitals

Another team looking to add a top-six forward, the Capitals are desperate for some help down the middle and have even started to shop Lars Eller as they look for viable replacements. Toews would be a huge upgrade on Eller and the Caps are likely going to be very busy leading up to the deadline.

Dallas Stars

The Stars are in the same boat and are looking for ways to improve for a long Stanley Cup Playoff run. They don't have their first round pick in 2023, but likely wouldn't need it here as Toews could be had for a couple of solid prospects and likely a second or third-round pick.
