NHL Rumors: NY Rangers Talking Blockbuster Trade
The New York Rangers are going all in this season as they look to win the Stanley Cup. General manager Chris Drury knows he has a championship caliber team and with one or two more pieces could really give the team a chance to take home top prize. Sounds like a blockbuster deal could be coming with the San Jose Sharks.
According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the Rangers have locked in on Sharks forward Timo Meier and are willing to give up some big pieces to facilitate the deal.
Meier is the top forward on the market and is having a career season. He's a pending restricted free agent and while his $10 million qualifying offer may sound scary, if you sign him to a long-term contract extension you avoid that mess.
Meier's cap hit is $6 million for this season and he's recorded 48 points in 51 games so far in 2022-23. The Rangers have $6.7 million in deadline cap space and could give the Sharks one of their two first-round picks plus a prospect filled package.
Sharks GM Mike Grier and Drury go way back and the two are very close friends. There's certainly some legs to Seravalli's report and consider the Rangers the heavy favorite to land Meier at this point.
