Toronto Maple Leafs Rumors: Toronto Still Kicking Tires on Timo Meier

According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown significant interest in San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier. It has been known that the Maple Leafs would like to add another forward to their top six, more specifically on their second line.

The Leafs only have 28 games left in their season to try and secure home-ice advantage against the Tampa Bay Lightning and would like to land a bigger fish ahead of the 2023 NHL trade deadline on Mar. 3, 2023. Meier, 26, has 51 points (30 goals and 21 assists) through 54 games with the Sharks has been a big name on the market and has been tied to a lot of teams so far this season. There has been some speculation that the Maple Leafs won’t be able to get the deal done because of the asking price.

Assuming that the asking price is similar to that of Bo Horvat’s trade to the New York Islanders, the Maple Leafs would need to part ways with a roster player, a higher-end prospect, and a 1st round pick. Toronto has the assets to make a trade of this nature. A trade package that could be seen going to San Jose for him would be, Fraser Minton, Ryan Tverberg, Toronto’s 2023 1st round pick and Alex Kerfoot. There would also need to be a third-party broker to make the money work, or the Sharks could retain a portion up to 50%, and for that could receive one of Toronto’s 3rd round picks as compensation.
