3 Potential Trade Destinations for Blue Jackets Jonathan Quick
The Columbus Blue Jackets shocked the hockey world late Tuesday night as they acquired LA Kings netminder Jonathan Quick in a multi-player trade. It was strictly a financial move to make the trade work as Quick is a pending free agent, 37, and not in the Blue Jackets plans for the rest of this season. Here's where he may end up:
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are trolling the market for some goaltending depth, but word is GM Kyle Dubas will need to be blown away with the trade to consider. The team is comfortable where things stand as Matt Murray is coming back from injury this week and Ilya Samsonov has shown he's capable of being a #1 netminder.
Two potential spin-offs from #LAKings / #CBJ trade:
— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) March 1, 2023
1. Do #CBJ try to flip Quick before deadline? (#Leafs goalie insurance? Quick's brother-in-law is TOR's Matt Moulson)
2. Do #CBJ attempt to package assets/picks to take a swing at #Yotes Jakob Chychrun? Told that's possible.
Arizona Coyotes
As Frank Seravalli mentions, the Arizona Coyotes are in play here as the Blue Jackets are looking at Jakob Chychrun. The Coyotes could take on Quick, but then move him again? Seems like a lot to unpack for the veteran goaltender who was blindsided by the trade.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Two executives who know Quick pretty well, Ron Hextall and Brian Burke. The Penguins continue to discuss trade scenarios and have been look at just about every position. Hextall isn't looking to spend big on a rental but are looking to find some more depth behind Tristan Jarry. The Penguins will be in the race to land Quick and expect to see at least one move from Hextall and company before Friday afternoon.
