Philadelphia Flyers GM Couldn't Find Trade Partner for JVR
Philadelphia Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher tried to trade James van Riemsdyk but to no avail. Fletcher awkwardly made it known after the 3pm trade deadline there was no market for his veteran forward.
JVR is a pending unrestricted free agent who is making $7 million against the cap. He's had an inconsistent season and the Flyers couldn't find any takers for his $3.5 million cap hit as they were open to retaining half of his salary.
The market spoke. I didn't have any offers until about 1:40 (p.m.). I got a call from a team and they had a concept that if they were able to move a forward off their team, then they'd have interest in acquiring JVR. We talked about the parameters and what the deal would look like. It made sense from that standpoint, but all along it was conditional on the other trade going through, and eventually the other trade fell through (about 25 minutes before the deadline).
The Flyers had advanced talks with the Detroit Red Wings but they weren't able to complete an order of business to facilitate the trade. The 33-year-old van Riemsdyk will finish out the season in Philly. He's recorded nine goals and 23 points in 41 appearances to this point.
