Calgary Flames Rumors: 3 Potential Landing Spots for Mikael Backlund

While speaking with reporters, Mikael Backlund noted that he is unsure about signing an extension. This is because the Calgary Flames missed the playoffs in 2022-23, and he wants the chance to win a Stanley Cup before his career is finished.

After these comments, there seems to be a legitimate chance that we see the longtime Flame traded this summer. There should be plenty of interest in him if he is made available, as he is an effective two-way forward who just posted a 56-point campaign in 82 games this season. Let's discuss three possible landing spots for the 34-year-old center because of it.

Carolina Hurricanes: The Carolina Hurricanes have had trouble finding a second-line center since losing Vincent Trocheck last offseason. As a result, perhaps they could be in the mix for Backlund's services. He would give them another experienced leader on their roster, and he would get the chance to play for one of the league's best teams.

Dallas Stars: The Dallas Stars could use a boost on their second line and penalty kill, and Backlund would provide them with just that. Dallas is one of the top teams in the Western Conference, and bringing in a player like Backlund would only make them better.

Colorado Avalanche: The Colorado Avalanche need help down the middle, and it does not help that they have several pending UFAs heading into the summer. J.T. Compher is the most notable of the bunch, and if he walks, Backlund could be a great replacement for him in the 2C role.
