Devils Rumors: Contract Extension Updates Two Key Forwards

The New Jersey Devils and forward Jesper Bratt are making significant progress in their contract extension talks.

General Manager Tom Fitzgerald expressed optimism, stating that negotiations have advanced well and that a long-term deal is within reach.

Bratt, who had a strong season, is considered a core player for the team, and both sides are eager to reach an agreement. The previous year's contract negotiations went down to the wire, but this time around, it seems less likely to be contentious, alleviating concerns about arbitration.

On the other hand, the contract situation for forward Timo Meier appears less certain. Acquired from the San Jose Sharks late in the season, Meier's performance with the Devils has been underwhelming.

While contract discussions have yet to commence in earnest, Fitzgerald plans to connect with Meier's agent, Claude Lemieux, after the team's pre-draft scouting meetings.

It is crucial for the Devils to establish a framework for an extension with Meier promptly to avoid a one-year qualifying offer worth $10 million, which could impact the team's cap space and potentially lead to unrestricted free agency in 2024.
