Matthews Isn’t Only Maple Leaf Extension In Jeopardy After Dubas Firing

So much of the talk surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs of late has been the status of Auston Matthews and his potential extension intentions. 

But there are others affected as well. One of the Leafs' key additions at the trade deadline, defenseman Luke Schenn, is an unrestricted free agent, and his future is now on hold. He told a Toronto radio station that his extension talks have been put off for now after the firing of general manager Kyle Dubas. 

(We had) conversations toward the end of the year, but of course in the last week and a half, things have arisen on the Leafs' end of things... I don't know what's going on behind the scenes... We'll just see how things shake out in the new few weeks I guess.

The trade for Schenn was one of Dubas' moves intended to shore up the Leafs for a playoff run, and it paid off in a first-round victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, when Schenn was one of the most valuable players on the blueline for Toronto, paired up with Morgan Rielly. 

Schenn just completed his 15th season in the NHL, and it's been a full circle for him, coming back to the team that drafted him with the 5th overall pick in the 2008 Draft. 

"It was all positive, my time in Toronto," said Schenn. "It's no secret how much I enjoyed my time there. It's something I would enjoy to do is come back, for sure."

That, however, will likely have to wait until a new general manager is in place.
