New York Rangers Rumors: Interesting Names Linked to Coaching Vacancy
The New York Rangers are looking for a new head coach after showing Gerard Gallant the door. There's been some speculation brewing as the Rangers are expected to make quite the splash and add a big name.
So far there's been three head coach's linked to the Rangers vacancy, which apparently is ongoing but hasn't reached the interview stage at this point. General manager Chris Drury is busy putting together his list of candidates to consider and word is Drury's pipe dream is having Mike Sullivan coaching the Rangers next season.
At this point, Sullivan isn't going anywhere as he's under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins and has received a vote of confidence from their ownership group. There's been some speculation brewing about the Toronto Maple Leafs tandem of Kyle Dubas and Sheldon Keefe being brought in to Pittsburgh, freeing up Sullivan to the Rangers, but at this point...pipe dream.
Another big name who has been linked by hockey insider Elliotte Friedman is Mike Babcock. Word is the Detroit Red Wings were considering him last season, as were the Dallas Stars. 'Babs' is on the list of consideration for the Rangers but if they have their way, Sullivan will be running practice next season.
