3 Potential Trade Destinations for Flyers' Kevin Hayes
The Philadelphia Flyers are shopping just about everyone on their roster as general manager Daniel Briere is building towards the future. The Flyers new GM is putting together a five-year plan which means he's basically looking to start with a clean slate of just young players in Philly and is looking to move out most of the veterans including Kevin Hayes. Here's three potential landing spots for the veteran center:
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes are looking for a game-breaker and while Hayes doesn't fit the bill, he does bring size and depth down the middle. The two teams talked at points last season about a deal and could circle back now that the 'Canes were pushed out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, thanks to a lack of offense and getting pushed around. Money is a factor here as Hayes is making $7.14 million against the cap for three more seasons. Briere does appear open to retaining some salary to get a better return in the deal.
Dallas Stars
The Stars have had a solid track record of adding veteran forwards and Hayes is someone the team has been linked to before. Dallas needs depth down the middle and at 6-foot-5, the Flyers forward brings more size to their top six. Last season in Philly, Hayes 54 points in 81 games and was scratched in the other game by John Tortorella for no reason. This kind of stuff wouldn't happen in Dallas. Hayes has a 12-team trade clause and it's likely playing hockey in Texas makes the approval list.
Columbus Blue Jackets
With the Blue Jackets adding Mike Babcock as their head coach it will be curious to see if any player vetoes a trade there as he doesn't have the best track record of being a player's coach. Columbus needs help down the middle and will get some with their #4 pick in the draft but they'll also need to add some veterans to give their youngsters time to develop. Hayes between Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine could be a productive trio for the next three seasons.
