Pittsburgh Penguins Rumors: 3 Free-Agent Options to Replace Tristan Jarry
The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to evaluate goaltender Tristan Jarry's game as there's a big decision coming in the next couple of weeks. New president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas admitted when he was hired that he was going to need some time to get a sense of Jarry's game behind the scenes before he offers the Penguins netminder a contract extension.
If Jarry doesn't get the five-to-six year deal he's looking for, look for the Penguins to target one of these three goalies on the free-agent market:
Frederik Andersen
The 33-year-old is in talks with the Carolina Hurricanes on an extension, but if Andersen hits the open market, Dubas will kick tires on a reunion. The two were together with the Toronto Maple Leafs and even though Dubas decided to go with Jack Campbell instead of Andersen, they do have a good relationship. Nothing more than a three contract extension would be the play in Pittsburgh.
Mackenzie Blackwood
The New Jersey Devils decided Akira Schmid is their goalie of the future and recently let Mackenzie Blackwood go. The former second-round pick is a bit of a gamble when it comes to carrying a load, however Casey DeSmith showed at the world championships, he's capable of winning some big games. This tandem would be risky, but Blackwood would cost much less than Jarry and give Dubas a chance to upgrade his top-six and top-four defense.
Joonas Korpisalo
To this point contract talks have been quiet with the Los Angeles Kings, as Joonas Korpisalo could be hitting the open market on July 1. He'll be a target for Dubas who has been linked to the goaltender before. Korpisalo was great for the Kings down the stretch, posting a .921 Sv.% in 11 games, the only problem was it didn't translate to Stanley Cup Playoff success. The Kings netminder is one of the younger options available and will be looking for at least a four-year contract. It could come from the Penguins if Jarry walks to free agency.
