NHL Rumors: 3 Teams Who Could Sign Free-Agent Defenseman Matt Dumba

Free-agent defenseman Matt Dumba continues to be one of the more intriguing players on the open market. He's looking for a contract next season and talks have picked up of late. The dust is starting to settle and expectation is Dumba signs a deal in the next few days. Here's where he could be ending up:

Arizona Coyotes.

It's been reported by multiple sources the 'Yotes and Dumba have had talks. Arizona is looking at taking a big jump in 2023-24 and adding a veteran presence on the blue line could go a long way. They have the cap space, they have the opportunity, it's all going to come down to interest level from Dumba's side of things. If he wants to sign on with a rebuilding team, the desert is wide open. If he's looking for a chance to win the Stanley Cup, look elsewhere.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have recently held discussions with Dumba's camp as well and so far no contract offer has been made. This is likely a ripple effect type of move as the Sharks are trying to move Erik Karlsson and are in advanced talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Should Karlsson be shipped out, there's going to be a glaring hole on the right-side of the blue line. Insert the free-agent blueliner and the Sharks could be looking much different in 2023-24.

Toronto Maple Leafs

There's been talks this summer between Brad Treliving and Dumba's agent, but they were unable to come to terms. Treliving turned his attention to John Klingberg and now it's going to be tough to also add Dumba. If Toronto makes a trade, especially involving Timothy Liljegren for another forward, look for Treliving to circle back on Dumba. When aren't the Leafs in cap hell? What's another season.
