Montreal Canadiens Rumors: Defenseman Becoming Trade Candidate

The Montreal Canadiens are rebuilding and are open to moving some of their veterans because of it. One player on their roster who is starting to pick up some steam in the rumor mill is defenseman David Savard.

Teams looking to add a shutdown defenseman with experience should certainly consider the prospect of adding Savard. On a playoff team, he would be a reliable presence on the bottom pairing because of his defense-first nature and overall physicality. Thus, there should be teams willing to add the 32-year-old for the right price.

Savard is coming off of a solid 2022-23 season with the Canadiens, posting three goals to go along with 20 points in 62 games played. Overall, besides his steady defensive play, he also is capable of providing some offense from the point in the process.

Savard carries a $3.5 million cap hit until the completion of the 2024-25 campaign, so any team that acquires him would need to be okay with the fact that he would be much more than a rental. We will need to wait and see if the Canadiens move him from here.
