NHL Rumors: 3 Teams Who Could Sign Free-Agent Danton Heinen
The NHL's 2023 free agency period is over a week old and there's not much talent left on the open market. Lots of big names have changed teams and now it's the depth options who remain. Insert free-agent forward Danton Heinen, who spent last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Here's the latest on where Heinen could be playing next season:
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are in the market for a bottom-six winger and Heinen could be their guy. He has the game to move up and down the lineup and can fill in among the top six when injuries occur. Heinen scored eight goals and 22 points in 65 games last season. Vancouver has to work out some cap issues and continue to discuss trades around Conor Garland and Tyler Myers.
in seriousness though the big shift i've noticed is that we're rapidly running out of players with both good underlyings AND good microstats that are undervalued. the best i could find still on the UFA market is danton heinen who played 10 minutes a night last season

— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) July 7, 2023The Leafs will round out their training camp invites and Heinen could make the list. They have a need for bottom-six wingers and with his versatility to play either side, Brad Treliving and the Leafs could be interested. Heinen throws his weight around a bit with 76 hits in 65 games and he's known to get a look on the second power-play unit. Toronto could use a bit of both.
Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks have all the cap space in the world and will still be signing a couple of players before the offseason is over. They know Heinen a little bit from the past as he spent a season and a half with the franchise after a trade from the Boston Bruins. There's a ton of opportunity to play in Anaheim and it could essentially be the perfect match for Heinen to catch on and eventually land a long-term contract.
