NHL Rumors: Top 3 Free-Agent Goalies Still Available
The 2023 NHL Offseason has slowed down a tremendous amount of late but that doesn't mean there isn't any talent left on the open market. Especially in goal, there's several free-agent netminders who have yet to sign and will likely be signing one-year deals before the end of August. As of July 12, here's the top five free-agent goalies who have yet to sign on the dotted line this summer:
Martin Jones
Jones was rumored to be on the LA Kings radar and the Pittsburgh Penguins' but neither of those teams decided to take the chance. After what was a very up and down season with the Seattle Kraken, Jones waits for a new deal for 2023-24. At 33 years old, he's actually one of the younger options available but his stats from last season were ugly, as he appeared in 48 games and posted a .886 save %, despite a 27-13-3 record. For now, it doesn't look like a return to Seattle's an option.
Jaroslav Halak
Jonathan Quick was signed in New York and that's sent Halak packing for another job. He's made it clear he wants to play in the NHL next season and even at 38 years old, isn't slowing down anytime soon. He's been a backup for quite some time now and knows the role and how to be a supportive partner. Halak's recorded 295 wins and is looking to hit the 300 milestone. The San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks could be potential landing spots.
Brian Elliott
Another 38-year-old, Elliott is looking for a new team after the Tampa Bay Lightning went in another direction this summer. He sits 7th among active goalies when it comes to wins, with 279 and of late, there's been a lot of buzz about a potential one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wherever he ends up, Elliott will battle for a job regardless of where he's penciled in on the depth chart.
