NHLTR Mock Trade: San Jose Sharks Trade Erik Karlsson to the Seattle Kraken

Welcome to the NHLTR mock trade series where we will showcase a potential 2023 offseason trade. From minor moves to major transactions, everything will be covered as we try to predict how the chips may fall this summer across the NHL.

Recently Norris-trophy winning defenseman Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks confirmed his reps have spoken with four teams about a trade. They include the Carolina Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Seattle Kraken. Today's focus is on the Kraken. Here's a trade to consider between the two clubs.

NHLTR Mock Trade: Sharks move Karlsson (retaining 50% salary) to the Kraken in exchange for Shane Wright, Justin Schultz and Alexander Wennberg

Sharks perspective: The prize here is Wright as he's a top prospect who fell in his draft and hasn't hit his stride yet in the NHL. He'd give the Sharks another blue chip prospect to build around up front. Both Schultz and Wennberg are in the final season of their contracts and hold modified no-trade clauses, however sunny California usually makes the list. San Jose would need to retain money as the Kraken, like most teams, are tight for cap space.

Kraken perspective: Seattle lands a game-breaking defenseman who can help boost their offense in a major way. The Krak love to score by committee and this wouldn't be changing much with Karlsson on board, it would just become more fun to watch. Seattle has a lot of toughness on their blue line but they lack a true power-play quarterback and could fill the void here in a major way. With some serious depth up front, losing Wright for four years of Karlsson won't set them back at all.
