Canadiens Rumors: Montreal to Trade Recently Re-Acquired Defenseman Jeff Petry
After being re-acquired by the Montreal Canadiens, veteran defenseman Jeff Petry finds himself as a potential trade candidate heading into next season. Canadiens beat reported Eric Engles commented on the recent blockbuster between the San Jose Sharks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Canadiens and had this to say:
There's a strong chance that the Canadiens will trade Petry - if not before the start of the season, the by the deadline. Believe they're already working on it.

Petry had an up-and-down first season in Pittsburgh. He finished the year with 31 points in 61 games and now heads back to the Canadiens with two years left on his deal at $6.5 million per season. He holds trade protection and submits a list of 15 teams he'd like to avoid.
Look for the Canadiens to continue to be active on the trade market. They sit in a weird transition stage with their roster and are trying to do their best to get younger and give their talented young core a chance to develop together. There's no denying the fact Montreal is very thin on the blue line and in goal so we'll see how that influences the early results once puck drops on next season.
As for Petry, he continues to be discussed in trades and could wind up on another new team before the start of the 2023-24 season.
