Flames Might Have Frontrunner For Next Captain

The Calgary Flames haven't had a captain since Mark Giordano and it is time with them heading in a new direction. A number of the players who have been with the team a while have already left or will likely leave within the year, and the team needs stability. They have that in three potential captain candidates who are all signed for at least six more years. But we might have a frontrunner for the next captain of the team.

Mikael Backlund would surely be a leading candidate if he were to re-sign, but that is looking more and more unlikely as time goes on. Who I would mark down as the top three candidates to be captain of the Flames are Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, and MacKenzie Weegar. Huberdeau and Weegar are signed for eight more years, so not only will they likely be sticking around longer, Kadri doesn't have the best chance at making it to the end of his deal and might not be captain material ahead of the other two.

Weegar said on Flames Talk that "I would love to be the captain of the Flames." Not only did he mention that, he has already been a vocal leader for the team over the course of one year. He hasn't been shy about noting that he just wants players on the team that want to be here. He should be a top-four defenseman for a long time and someone who could be a good leader. He wants to be in Calgary and is the only one of the three most likely options to speak up about the captaincy yet.
