Marchessault Talks Rocky Relationship With Coach & Possible Extension
Jonathan Marchessault is coming off a dream spring in which he led the Vegas Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup. But he wasn't mincing words recently when discussing his rocky relationship with head coach Bruce Cassidy.
It hasn’t always been the rainbow and the good weather between us. We got into each other a couple of times, on the bench, during games, during the playoffs. But I think he wanted the best out of me and we managed to be able to work together.
One of the original Golden Knights, Marchessault added "He is a coach that I respect. We won together, so he will always have my respect.”
But heading into the final year of his 6-year contract, with a $5M cap hit, are the two sides on "respectful" enough terms that an extension is being discussed?
“There are no negotiations that have been done," admitted Marchessault. "I know that sometimes the Golden Knights like to take their time with that. We will see what it will give".
Rainbows or not, it's safe to say that Marchessault and the Golden Knights found the pot at the end of it, as the veteran forward recorded a league-best 13 goals in the playoffs, and a plus-17 (also tops in the NHL) taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy and the Stanley Cup.
