New Jersey Devils Sign Cal Foote

The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Cal Foote to a one-year, two-way contract. At the NHL level, Foote will make $800,000. If he plays in the AHL, he will make $350,000 with $450,000 guaranteed.

The Nashville Predators acquired Foote from the Tampa Bay Lightning before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline passed, but they opted not to send him a qualifying offer. Now, Foote has finally found a new home one month into free agency with the Devils.

Foote will be looking to make the Devils' roster out of camp. With Damon Severson leaving in free agency, there is a spot on the bottom pairing up for grabs. If Foote does well in camp, perhaps he could earn himself a spot in their top six. At a minimum, he should be a decent depth guy for them.

Foote played in 50 games this past season split between the Lightning and Predators, where he had posted two goals and seven points.

Overall, this is a low-risk move by the Devils. It also reunites him with his brother, Devils prospect Nolan Foote.
