NHL Rumors: Tomas Tatar Linked to Contender

Tomas Tatar is one of the top free agents still looking for a new home as we enter the final portion of August. During a recent appearance on NHL Network, David Pagnotta said that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be interested in signing Tatar to a PTO.

The Maple Leafs could use another forward in their top nine, and Tatar would give them a good option. The 32-year-old is coming off of a solid campaign that saw him post 20 goals to go along with 48 points in 82 games with the New Jersey Devils. Adding that kind of production would be good for the Maple Leafs, so it would make sense for them to look at him as a PTO target.

Yet, the Maple Leafs are also entering the season with cap trouble, and that will remain the case when they place Matt Murray and Jake Muzzin on LTIR. Thus, it may be hard for the Maple Leafs to actually sign Tatar to a deal for the season if he impressed during a potential PTO.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have also been deeply connected to Tatar, so we will need to wait and see what happens with the veteran forward from here.
