Blue Jackets Bench Top Offseason Addition

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Pascal Vincent made a notable move during the club's 4-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, as he benched Damon Severson, a defenseman they signed to an eight-year, $50 million contract this summer, for the entire third period.

Severson made a turnover in the defensive zone that directly led to a Red Wings goal.

Severson has had a quiet start to his Blue Jackets tenure, as he has yet to record a point in his first three games. However, when looking at his past numbers, it is fair to assume that he will start heating up soon. Perhaps even being benched could end up being the spark that leads to him getting his offensive production going.

Nevertheless, seeing a key part of a team's roster getting benched is always notable. We will need to wait and see how Severson responds to this coaching decision from here.
