Edmonton Oilers Sign Prospect Defenseman
The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Beau Akey to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The Oilers selected Akey with the 56th overall pick of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The right-shot defenseman is viewed as having a good amount of potential and should become a legitimate NHL defenseman later down the road. Thus, it makes sense that the Oilers have inked the 18-year-old to his entry-level contract fairly early.
Akey is currently playing in the OHL with the Barrie Colts, where he has recorded a goal and three points in four games. He also is coming off a solid season with the Colts, as he had 11 goals and 47 points in 66 games. He will be hoping to take a big step forward this season and is already off to a great start with the club this season.
Overall, we will need to wait and see how Akey develops from here. However, when looking at how he is playing right now, the Oilers are probably quite happy to have landed him in the second round.
