Maple Leafs Make Final Roster Cuts — Nick Robertson Gets Expected News

Once again, former top prospect Nick Robertson has failed to make the Toronto Maple Leafs roster out of camp, being one of 10 players sent to the Marlies of the AHL today.

Robertson was a second-round pick in the 2019 Draft and flashed plenty of potential in the leadup to his NHL debut—which actually came in the 2020 playoffs. But a never-ending series of injuries has continued to keep him down, as he's only managed to play a total of 31 games with the Leafs over the past three seasons.

Season-ending shoulder surgery last January was the latest medical problem for Robertson, but he's fully recovered at this point. Leg and groin injuries as well as a concussion have also conspired to derail his career.

Forward Pontus Holmberg is another notable who'll start his season in the AHL. He played 37 games last year with the big club, notching 13 points in 10 minutes of ice-time per night.

Others heading down to the Marlies:

  • F Nick Abruzzese
  • F Max Ellis
  • G Dennis Hildeby
  • F Roni Hirvonen
  • D Topi Niemelä
  • D Marshall Rifai
  • F Logan Shaw
  • F Ryan Tverberg

The moves mean that 19-year-old rookie Fraser Minten has made the team.

The Leafs face off against the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena to kick offf the 2023-24 season.
