NHL Rumors: Devils "Keeping An Eye" On Goalie Trade Market

The New Jersey Devils are currently keeping a vigilant watch over the goaltender market as they prepare to kick off the new season, according to James Nichol and Elliotte Friedman.

General Manager Tom Fitzgerald is actively exploring potential options to enhance the team's goaltending situation.

As of right now, the Devils are placing their faith in the tandem of Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid.

Last season, the 27-year-old Vanecek did not make a great impression in New Jersey, recording a brutal .825 SV%, 4.64 GAA, and a 1-3 record over seven games played.

He's a former second-round pick by the Washington Capitals in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

However, their approach is one of patience and assessment.

While there is no immediate rush to make changes in the goalie department, it's evident that the Devils are committed to staying proactive.

The 23-year-old Schmid exploded onto the scene last year, putting up a phenomenal .922 SV%, 2.13 GAA, one shutout, and a 9-5 record over 18 games played.

He's a former fifth-round pick by the Devils in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

They intend to closely evaluate the performance of their current goaltending duo in the early stages of the season, aiming to make informed decisions before the trade deadline in March.

This measured approach reflects their determination to ensure a formidable presence between the pipes and underscores their readiness to make strategic moves when necessary, all in the pursuit of a successful season ahead. Photo Credit: Tom Horak-USA TODAY Sports
