The Latest On The Ottawa Senators/Alex Formenton Situation

Many of you are probably wondering what is going on with Alex Formenton. He had a strong first full season back in 2021-22, but couldn't come to an agreement on a new contract with the Ottawa Senators and ended up playing over in Switzerland in the National League last season. His year didn't go as planned and he scored 10 goals and 13 points in 22 games, but he would have probably liked to be somewhere in the NHL since he has the talent.

At this point, the Senators don't have a need for him in their lineup, especially with the contract dispute already with Shane Pinto. The team is too occupied with Pinto at the moment to really worry about Formenton who was expected to be traded during the summer according to Bruce Garrioch. We haven't heard much about him because the Senators didn't have to qualify him again this year.

Formenton still has value and could find an opportunity on another team if Ottawa pulls the trigger and moves him. At this point, they will get a lot less value then they would have last season by trading him. I can see a team like the Anaheim Ducks, who just lost Alex Killorn to injury, take a chance on a skilled winger like Formenton as they just took a chance on Lassi Thompson by claiming him off of waivers.

A way that everything can work out accordingly for the Senators is if they manage to sway a team to take on Mathieu Joseph's contract with Formenton as the sweetener. The Philadelphia Flyers were a team talking to the Senators previously. Talks could potentially pick up again. It is already very likely Formenton won't play for the Senators again.
