Matt Petgrave, who appears to lose his balance after a collision, had his leg strike up at Johnson, causing his skate blade to cut Johnson's throat. Petgrave, who's been a solid playmaker with the Sheffield Steelers, also racked up the most penalty minutes last year in the EIHL, and has previously been fined and suspended for on-ice disciplinary matters.
South Yorkshire Police announced Monday that "officers remain at the scene carrying out enquiries and our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing." They do not mention any suspect that they might be investigating, nor do they mention Petgrave.
The Police caution us to "avoid speculation regarding the incident while we continue our enquiries".
Johnson, a former member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, was 29.
