BREAKING: Blackhawks Reveal Dramatic Update on Corey Perry

Huge news out of Chicago, as the Blackhawks have placed Corey Perry on unconditional waivers and plan to terminate his contract.

The team has released a statement, and it doesn't sound good:

After an internal investigation, the Chicago Blackhawks have determined that Corey Perry has engaged in conduct that is unacceptable, and in violation of both the terms of his Standard Player's Contract and the Blackhawks' internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments. As such, Corey Perry has been placed on unconditional waivers. In the event Mr. Perry clears waivers, we intend to terminate his contract effective immediately.

On Monday, Hawks GM Kyle Davidson said that it was a team decision when Perry suddenly went M.I.A. last week, although the veteran's agent made a somewhat conflicting statement later yesterday, saying that Perry has "stepped away from the Chicago Blackhawks to attend to personal matters."

Perry, 38, was acquired by Chicago in the offseason from the Tampa Bay Lightning in an attempt to add some additional veteran leadership for the young team and No. 1 pick Connor Bedard. Obviously, that has gone horribly wrong.

Because the action was to terminate Perry's contract, the Blackhawks would not have to pay the balance of his $4M contract this season—unless he appeals.

Perry, a 19-year NHL veteran, had 9 points in 16 games for the Blackhawks.
