Insider Pegs Elias Pettersson's Contract Value

Elias Pettersson cracked the 100-point mark last season (102) in a huge breakout campaign. He's upped the ante in 2023-24, currently on pace for a 120-point season. But with his 3-year, $7M AAV contract with the Vancouver Canucks coming to a conclusion, what will his next contract be valued at?

According to NHL Insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Pettersson's salary on a new deal should start with a '12', "followed by six more zeroes" as he put it.

With the 25-year-old set to be a restricted free agent at seasons' end, Pagnotta notes that "the sense of urgency does not need to be very high right now," and indeed, he reports that, while we've heard that his agency (CAA) and the Canucks have been free to talk during the season, "according to a well-placed source close to the situation, there haven't been any recent meaningful contract discussions between the two sides."

The Canucks stand second in the Western Conference with 27 points, just one back of the Vegas Golden Knights, and Pettersson is in the top five in scoring with 8 goals and 20 assists for 28 points (with teammates Quinn Hughes and JT Miller just ahead of him), so things are just fine in Vancouver these days. But a Pettersson extension would definitely raise the satisfaction level.

Pettersson's future seems to be on a lot of people's minds these days, as we also reported on Tuesday that Insider Elliotte Friedman has an intriguing thought about how Pettersson and his group might be approaching his next contract.
