Insider Posits Potential New Powerhouse Suitor For Patrick Kane

The Patrick Kane decision is expected any time now, and the usual suspects at the top of the frontrunners list are still the Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings and perhaps the Buffalo Sabres. But NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman offered a stunning new possibility on his 32 Thoughts podcast Monday morning—the Boston Bruins.

There are a couple of teams out there who suspect that Boston might be another team that's poked around on this... It makes sense, because the thing about Boston is, they're a good team, they could win (the Cup), (but) I don't know if they could do more than one year, I don't know if that makes sense for them. But they are the kind of organization that would look at Kane and ask 'Does this help us?' or in a good year, 'What can we add to make us better?'

It does kind of fit with Boston's DNA of 'we're good, what can we add, at what cost?'

The Bruins were in a similar situation last year, with a tremendous season going, best record in the league, and they made several moves to try to get them over the top, notably trading for the likes of Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway, and Tyler Bertuzzi. (Of course, it didn't work, as they were eliminated in the first round, but nothing is guaranteed in the NHL).

Could the Bruins get in on the Kane sweepstakes and pull the trigger? They lost two iconic forwards to retirement in the offseason in Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, so why not try to help fill the void with another?

"This makes sense to me," sums up Friedman, though he isn't predicting a Bruins signing specifically, and still looks at the Panthers and the Red Wings as the frontrunners.
