Jay Woodcroft Ejects Himself From Oilers Bench

With the Edmonton Oilers' shockingly dreadful start to the season reaching yet another low, head coach Jay Woodcroft—squarely on the hot heat—essentially ejected himself from the Oilers' bench late in Monday night's loss:

"He's already departed!"... "Must have known what he said was going to get him tossed, didn't hang around for the call." The Sportsnet commentators giving the play-by-play of Woodcroft simply leaving the bench and heading towards the locker room after giving the referees an angry earful. Woodcroft received a bench minor and a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Now the question is, will that be how Woodcroft ultimately departs the Oilers for good? The supposed Stanley Cup contenders are now off to a stunning 2-8-1 start and have lost three straight, sitting in 7th place in the Pacific Division. Talk was already circulating before last night's 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks about whether Woodcroft would be coaching his last game.

For his part, the Oilers coach said afterward that he did not use a profanity at the refs, and said he thought "it was a fair question" that he posed, but admitted that he has to "be better."

Some Oilers fans would certainly agree.

The Oilers next game? Against none other than the winless San Jose Sharks, on Thursday.
