Report: Patrick Kane Turned Down Several Multi-Year Deals

According to a report, Patrick Kane turned down several multi-year deals in making his decision to go to the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year contract. Greg Wyshynski of ESPN reports:

This is what Kane wanted. An NHL source told me that Kane had multi-year offers on the table from other teams. But Kane and his representatives wanted a one-year deal and a chance to reevaluate his next steps after this season.

Detroit, likely, wasn't willing to go longer than one year at this point. Coming off hip resurfacing surgery is no piece of cake. In fact, the four players who've tried to come back from this procedure in the NHL have had very little, to no success at all.

The list and the numbers are ominous for Kane:

36-year-old Nicklas Backstrom, having stepped away from the Washington Capitals last month due to lingering issues with his hip, was only able to play 47 games after his surgery, over last season and the beginning of this year, recording 22 points.

Ed Jovanovski, back in 2013-14 was only able to play 37 games, and recorded 5 points, at the age of 37, before retiring.

And the news was even worse for two others: Carl Hagelin, 35, who retired this past summer after being unable to come back at all from his procedure in February. Ryan Kelser had the surgery at age 36 in May of 2020, and also wasn't able to return to the NHL.

It remains to be seen if Patrick Kane can go where no other hockey players before him have gone. The Red Wings are banking just over $2M on it ($2.75M pro-rated for the rest of the season).
