Pittsburgh Penguins Place New Defenseman On Waivers

The Pittsburgh Penguins recently made a move by placing defenseman Will Butcher on waivers.

Butcher spent the entire 2023 training camp on the injured list, a setback that prevented him from contributing to the team's preseason preparations.

Butcher has not played a single game in the current season.

He started the year on the season-opening injured reserve list due to an undisclosed injury.

Last season, with the Buffalo Sabres, the 28-year-old scored two goals and eight points across 37 games played, along with a -10 plus/minus rating.

The decision to place Butcher on waivers is part of the Pittsburgh Penguins' efforts to manage their organizational depth chart.

If he remains unclaimed on waivers, the plan is to assign him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.

Over his five-year career in the NHL, Butcher has amassed 16 goals and 114 total points across 275 games played, along with an ugly -37 plus/minus rating.
