It was already reported that the Canadiens' primary goal was to sign Montembeault to an extension, and now they have done just that. This will put an end to the trade rumors that have been surrounding Montembeault. Yet, at the same time, they are likely to heat up with Jake Allen.
Montembeault is off to a strong start this season with the Canadiens, sporting a 5-3-1 record, a .910 save percentage, and a 2.73 goals-against average in 10 games. With that, he has improved each season since he has joined the Canadiens, so it makes sense that they are keeping him around.
In the end, Montembeault has gotten a nice raise and some added job security in the process. We will need to wait and see how well he performs for the Canadiens during this deal from here.
