Insider Lists 6 Potential Landing Spots for Sean Monahan
Trade talks have been running hot and heavy for Montreal Canadiens center Sean Monahan all season long, as his one-year, $2 million contract is set to leave him an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Although the Canadiens haven't made a final decision of whether to try to extend him or trade him, that hasn't stopped the offers from coming in and the rumors from flying.
Daily Faceoff insider Matt Larkin has listed six destinations to watch for the former No. 6 overall pick:
Boston Bruins
The B's, of course, have been looking to restock their pivot since both Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci called it a career last summer. If they can't find a way to somehow snag their first choice Elias Lindholm, Monahan is a good fallback to add to their top-nine.
Colorado Avalanche
They need to improve on their 2C spot, and after Valeri Nichushkin was lost indefinitely after entering the player assistance program this week, they're even more desperate for help up front.
Edmonton Oilers
As Larkin notes, the Oilers are in the market for a No. 3 center, and that role would fit Monahan to a T. His cap hit should be manageable for the cap-strapped club.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs have their Big 3 of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander, but after that, finding offense has been a challenge. Monahan's 11 goals and 27 points would place him above every Leaf not named Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares or Rielly.
Vancouver Canucks
They're in the market to add a top-six forward. If they can't land an impact name, Monahan is a nice fallback, as Larkin notes.
Winnipeg Jets
They're going all-in this season, and adding Monahan's face-off acumen (9th in the league at 57.7%) would be a big add to boost one of their few weaknesses.
